Faith Communities and Mental Health: A Westchester County Success Story
Faith Communities and Mental Health: A Success Story
By Michelle Snyder, LCSW, MDiv, Director of the Soul Shop Movement
In March 2020, as I prepared for a Soul Shop™ workshop in White Plains, I was excited by the strong turnout. Soul Shop™, which equips faith leaders to support those affected by suicide, doesn't usually attract large crowds. But that day in Westchester, the energy was palpable, and attendance set records. Little did we know the world would shut down days later.
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Westchester County, led by Pat White, quickly adapted, bringing together community partners such as NAMI, AFSP, WJCS, and local faith leaders. This collaboration has since resulted in multiple mental health initiatives, including virtual forums, ASIST trainings, and Soul Shop™ workshops. Westchester has also played a key role in developing Soul Shop™ for Black Churches and will host the upcoming Training for Trainers.
When people ask how governments and faith communities can collaborate on mental health, I always point to Westchester County as a model of innovation and teamwork. I’m grateful to be part of such an impactful partnership!
